The treasure chest program, started by UNC Audiology and Speech Language Sciences in 2017, uses age-appropriate books and toys to improve children’s communication and language skills. Raaz mentors graduate students who are training to become speech therapists and their work brings them to the Seva community through a departmental initiative called the Greeley Treasure Chest Program. One of the volunteers who helped Pappas fill bags last Monday was Caitlin Raaz, an assistant professor of audiology and speech linguistics at UNC. The Seva community learns from families or parents in need of help through partner agencies such as the United Way of Weld County, Centennial BOCES, North Range Behavioral Health, and the Speech Language Department at the University of Northern Colorado. Seva, pronounced Save-ah, is an East Indian term meaning selfless service, Pappas said. The bags were filled with a gently used stuffed animal, a gently used book, family-friendly crafts, Play Doh and a snack.
